Create yourself simple idea why communication is important, and what it means for you. This exercise can make you think for whom we are here, what we are giving, getting and sharing with others.
I think you should see, that it's vital for us to find, express and share ourselves, to become understood, members of community, to gain wisdom and experience. To learn from others. Language is a tool, but also a world in itself. It's simple and complex at same time. You do it, consume it, live in it. You are something through it.
Finnish is my native language, something where I understand fine nuances, small differences between words and meanings. In finnish language I am in my strongest and weakest, most fragile, creative and simple. It's closest of pure me.
English is my tool to create bridges. To work out in unexperienced zones. I don't need to be that careful, not that fine grained. Something happens. I am on my way and will see the result at the end. English is my hammer and words are nails to build bridges.
German is a bike for a boy. I will fall and fall again. At the end I manage to learn it. Maybe. Even if I'm not trying to really master it, I hope to be at the end on level where it starts to work for me, opens up, shares its secrets with me. German will open me new world to share with my wife.
In the end it turns again to a point from where it started: we come to ourselves, we grow, change attitudes, ideas and develop our aims to meet other like us and different from us. We use language for this. We are within language, we develop there, we find ourselves from words and actions connected to them, are lost and found. Real. Unreal. And true.
